Questions and problems

Answers to common questions, and what to do when a message appears.

#Browsers and devices

Which browser should I use? A recent Chrome, Edge or Firefox. Recording video needs a browser that can record WebM; if yours can't, the Record dialog says This browser can't record video. Use a recent Chrome, Edge or Firefox.

Can I use the Studio on a phone? No. It needs a larger screen, and says The Studio needs a larger screen. Open it on a computer to match points and place controls. Exploring and replaying work fine on a phone.

What is "A new version of oSplit is ready"? The site was updated while you had it open. Press Reload to get the new version. A Studio project is saved first. It never reloads by itself, and ✕ hides it until there is a newer version. On a phone's home screen it is the only way to refresh.

#Tracks and files

Why is my file refused? oSplit reads GPX and CSV. A FIT, TCX or KML file gives FIT/TCX/KML files are not supported yet. Export your run as GPX from Garmin Connect or Strava. See GPS tracks.

Why can't I share my track? Common reasons: it has no times (This track has no timestamps, so it can't be shared.), it never crosses the map (This track doesn't cross this map. It can still be opened here), the course doesn't allow tracks from you, or you didn't tick the confirmation. The dialog explains which.

Where are my tracks stored? On your computer, in the browser, unless you switch on Share with this course. Then only the part over the map, plus 300 m, is sent, as positions and times. See GPS tracks.

Why do some runners have a "—" in the splits? They missed that control: their track never came within 40 m of it.

#Maps and courses

What does "Private" mean? And "Unlisted"? Private is only you and the people you invite. Unlisted is anyone with the link, but it isn't listed. Public is listed for everyone. See Sharing and settings.

A link says "That course is not in the library" or "That map is not available". The course or map may be private, taken down or deleted. For privacy, you get the same message whichever it is. If it should be yours, sign in.

I can't edit a course. Edit course is for the course's owner and editors. If you can add courses to its map, publishing makes your own copy.

What do "≈" and "map fit" mean? ≈ 185 m next to the climb means it was estimated from terrain heights, not typed in. The map fit is how well the scan was matched to the ground, in metres: see The Studio and aligning a scan.

Why is the printed scale wrong? Print at 100% and turn off "fit to page" in the browser's print dialog. See Record, print and share.

Can I move a course to a re-scanned map? Yes. Publish the new scan as a new version of the map, and choose to move the courses, or use Move to the newest version on a course's page.

#Accounts

Do I need an account? Not to look at maps, replay races or use the Studio. You need one to publish to your account, share with other people, or use the RouteGadget and OpenStreetMap imports.

I got "Too many attempts". Some things are limited to stop abuse: sign-in, changes to maps and courses, the imports, and sending to a watch. Wait a few minutes and try again.

What does oSplit store about me? Without an account, nothing. With one, your name, club, email and sign-in methods, your devices, what you publish and share, and a security log kept for 180 days. There are no advertising trackers. See the privacy notice.

How do I leave? Account, then Delete account…: see Your account.

#The watch

The watch says "Code expired". The code lasts 15 minutes. Press START on the watch for a new one, and send again.

The watch says "Connect your phone". It needs the Garmin Connect app on your phone, connected by Bluetooth, only to fetch courses. See The Garmin watch app.

The send dialog says "That code has expired or does not exist". Open Get courses on the watch for a new code. A code can take several courses, but each course must be sent within its 15 minutes.
